Accelerating Reliability Innovation for the Mining Industry

Mining operations face persistent challenges related to equipment wear, corrosion, maintenance costs, asset reliability, and unplanned downtime. Solving these challenges requires collaboration between operators, suppliers, manufacturers, technology developers, and researchers.

The MARIOS Consortium (MARIOS) is an industry-led innovation network focused on identifying, validating, and deploying technologies that improve equipment durability, reliability, and operational performance. Through collaborative research, technology development, industrial testing, and deployment programs, MARIOS helps industry solve reliability challenges faster and with lower risk than organizations could achieve independently.

MARIOS aligns its activities with industry priorities and supports the deployment of technologies that create measurable value for mining operations through access to multidisciplinary expertise, industrial-scale facilities, and a broad network of technology providers and research partners.

Monitoring & Inspection

Early identification of developing asset issues enables operators to reduce downtime, lower maintenance costs, and improve operational decision-making. MARIOS supports the development and validation of monitoring and inspection technologies that strengthen predictive maintenance programs.

Current focus areas include:

  • Corrosion under insulation monitoring and detection
  • Integrity monitoring of non-metallic slurry pipelines
  • Haul truck tire performance monitoring and life prediction
  • Advanced inspection and condition-monitoring technologies
Portfolio Lead: Chris Pack
Advanced Materials

Demonstrated Industry Impact

MARIOS projects have delivered measurable value to industry, including:

  • Ore-processing improvements valued at approximately $9.5 million annually
  • Overlay qualification procedures generating approximately $30 million annually
  • Slurry transport pipe technologies contributing to improvements exceeding $100 million
  • Deployment of advanced manufacturing processes for wear-resistant materials within Alberta industry
