Dr. Karen Budwill’s research focus lies in the field of applied environmental microbiology. She is interested in the power of microbial communities and processes in the environment (in particular deep, anaerobic subsurface environments) to bio-convert and generate energy from hydrocarbons and organic waste, to enhance hydrocarbon recovery and to remediate contaminated environments. Dr. Budwill has done extensive research over the last 15 years on microbial bioconversion of coal to methane and has recently expanded her research to microbial enhanced oil recovery and methanogenesis of residual diluent in oil sands tailings deposits.
