Mark Belec is the Technical Lead for the Pylypow Facility and supervises a team of technologists and technicians who provide design, technical, and production support in the fabrication of specialized instrumentation with the Industrial Sensors Technology and Informatics group. His team is also responsible for technical support and field service for deployed specialty instrumentation.  

Mark has extensive experience in a Research and Development environment.  He was on the technical team responsible for developing the first cellular telephone system in Alberta as well as participating in the construction and operations of Alberta’s first semiconductor fabrication facility at the University of Alberta in the mid-’80s. Mark has expertise in electronics design, product development, MEMs/semiconductor fabrication, and electronic manufacturing. He currently works mainly with clients in the oil sands, mining, and forestry sectors.   

Mark’s passion for his work comes from being part of innovation. He believed it is one thing to conceive and brainstorm an idea but is another thing entirely to make it work in the field.  Mark appreciates that there are always new discoveries and projects to challenge the abilities and creativity of his team. 

Mark’s greatest pleasure and pastime is being a grandpa to his two-year-old granddaughter. He also enjoys working out, fly fishing trips with his close friends, and camping.
