On January 14, CTV News, Edmonton, stopped by InnoTech Alberta to learn more about the new Carbon Fibre Processing facility, and the transformative power of using Alberta’s bitumen resources as a carbon fibre precursor.
Carbon fibre is a strong, light and energy-efficient material powering innovation in aerospace, automotive and renewable energy. When derived from bitumen, carbon fibre offers potential advantages of lower feedstock costs and diversification of applications, creating the market for high-value, non-combustion carbon fibre products.
This facility is Canada’s first industry accessible, fully integrated Carbon Fibre Processing facility, funded by Prairies Economic Development Canada and the Government of Alberta. The facility is a critical tool to scale production of carbon fibres derived from Alberta’s bitumen up to a pre-commercial scale prior to commercial production.
Following its successful launch at the end of November, the facility welcomed CTV News and the opportunity to give Albertans a closer look at the process and its provincial impact. The segment aired on Wednesday evening and marked the first time the public has seen the production line in operation. View it here.
