InnoTech Alberta has two Joint Industry Projects (JIPs) focused on hydrogen.

Elemental carbon market assessment

The first JIP is a collaboration between InnoTech Alberta and nine clients and is funded in part by Alberta Innovates (Hydrogen Centre of Excellence) and Natural Resources Canada.

This JIP’s focus is on determining the technical and market conditions for elemental carbon resulting from hydrogen production using methane pyrolysis.

This JIP is open to new participants.

This JIP has three areas of focus:

  1. Deriving the application of different forms of elemental carbon and their potential.
  2. Developing by-product carbon in such a way as to improve process economics.
  3. Utilizing methane pyrolysis to produce valuable carbon products.

Decentralized methane pyrolysis production

The second JIP’s focus is on the decentralization of the methane pyrolysis production process, making hydrogen production and transportation more economically efficient

Decentralizing methane pyrolysis production presents four main challenges:

  1. The retail prices for hydrogen (H2) are two to four times higher than gasoline and diesel per gigajoule (GJ).
  2. Current hydrogen production is centralized and must be transported to retailers and consumers.
  3. Hydrogen transportation costs contribute up to 4 CAD/kgH2 (31%) to the retail price (12.75 CAD/kgH2).
  4. Centralized hydrogen production projects take years to develop, and supply is typically dedicated to high-volume offtake (e.g., refining, fertilizer production).
