Pipeline Integrity and Corrosion Management (PICoM) is a program that fosters collaboration between operators, service providers, and subject matter experts to identify emerging pipeline integrity challenges, evaluate technologies, and develop collaborative solutions that improve reliability and reduce risk.
The PICoM program combines industry workshops and targeted joint industry projects (JIPs) to help participants identify common pipeline integrity challenges and develop practical solutions.
Workshops provide a forum for pipeline operators, service providers, and subject matter experts to share experiences, discuss emerging issues, and prioritize areas of collective interest. Selected topics may then advance into collaborative JIPs, where members jointly evaluate technologies, generate field-relevant data, and develop guidance to support more informed integrity management decisions.
Current and emerging areas of interest include:
These sessions are designed to encourage open dialogue, share lessons, and identify areas where collaborative research or technology evaluation could deliver value.
Participants can expect a combination of technical presentations, industry case studies, and facilitated discussion. Attendance is free, and participation is open to:
The next event will take place in early 2027. We will ask registered participants for their availability soon to help determine the schedule.
Interested in participating? Register today. Attendance is complimentary.
These collaborative applied research projects are designed to address priority pipeline integrity and corrosion challenges identified by industry participants. By combining industry expertise, InnoTech Alberta’s specialized facilities and expertise, and leveraged funding, JIPs help generate practical data, independently evaluate technologies, and develop solutions that can be applied across the sector.
Participation in PICoM JIPs is optional. Costs are determined by the project scope and shared among participating organizations, allowing members to leverage resources and reduce the cost of developing solutions to common integrity challenges.
Cleaning Pig Evaluation Programs
Evaluated multiple cleaning pig designs using both flow-loop and pull-through testing methods to improve deposit removal and reduce under-deposit corrosion risk.
Filming Corrosion Inhibitor Studies
Assessed inhibitor film formation, persistence, and compatibility with pigging operations to support corrosion mitigation strategies
Pipeline Sludge Database and Analytics
Developed a data-driven platform combining characterization of pipeline sludge, microbial activity, and chemistry data to support corrosion management and evidence-based maintenance decisions.
