The Thermochemical Processing Group (TCP) is a research and technology development team located in Vegreville, Alberta. Thermochemical Processing specializes in biomass conversion technologies for heat generation and distributed heating systems, cogeneration of heat and electrical power, production of biochar and advanced carbons, bio-chemicals, soil amendments and fertilizers. Agglomeration of organic and inorganic mixtures is a specialty including extrusion pelletizing, spheroids, briquettes, and wafer products. The TCP team has research labs ranging from lab, bench, pilot scale to demonstration scale equipment. The team has developed several patents with more currently being developed. The TCP group serves SMEs (small and medium enterprises) and large industrial clients in the Forestry, Agriculture and Food, Municipal and the emerging Bio-Economy sectors and collaborates closely with government partners, post-secondary institutions and other research organizations.
As a founding member (in collaboration with Lakeland College) of the Alberta Biochar Initiative (ABI), InnoTech Alberta has biochar production and testing facilities in Vegreville and has conducted numerous greenhouse trials, growth chamber tests and field trials validating the beneficial attributes of biochar as a soil productivity amendment (particularly in the areas of land reclamation and remediation) and as a carbon sequestration agent. The ABI has made several applications to regulatory agencies in support of the over 60 ABI industry partners.
The December, 2015 CFIA approval of Air Terra supplied biochar is a major milestone achievement. The Thermochemical Processing Team, in collaboration with the Alberta Biochar Initiative, was instrumental in this accomplishment.
