nanoAlberta was created as an organization dedicated to the implementation of the Government of Alberta's Nanotechnology Strategy, which was announced in 2007. nanoAlberta provided leadership and coordination of the province's wide range of capabilities, organizations and individuals in an effort to capture a market share of the $20 billion in nano-enabled commerce by 2020.

nanoAlberta works to ensure the coordination and synergy between industry, universities and government. It takes advantage of Alberta's nanotechnology infrastructure and intellectual capital to enhance its commercial potential.

An investment of $130 million by the Government of Alberta was committed to nanoAlberta over a five year period. These funds are being used to expand the research capacity in nanotechnology and to develop new commercial applications that support the province's traditional economic strengths and spur economic growth in new areas.
